Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park showcases the majesty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Shenandoah Valley and the heart of the Appalachian Trail. Original Dogo explored this majestic park and was able to use our knives.
Shenandoah National Park is an American national park encompassing part of the Blue Mountain Range in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The park is long and narrow, with the Shenandoah River and its wide valley to the west and the rolling foothills of the Virginia foothills to the east. Skyline Drive is the main road in the park, generally traversing near the crest of the mountains. Nearly 40% of the land area, 322 km2, has been designated as wilderness and is protected as part of the National Wildlife Conservation System. The highest peak is Hawksbill Mountain, with an altitude of 1,235.
The Appalachian Mountains: Stretching for nearly 2,000 miles (3,200 km) from the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador to central Alabama in the United States, the Appalachian Mountains form a natural barrier between the eastern coastal plain and the vast Interior Lowlands of North America.

Virginia
Virginia has the distinction of having more miles of the A.T. than any other state—nearly a quarter of the Trail’s entire length. The Trail also travels through the history-filled, rolling mountains of Shenandoah National.

Hike the A.T.
The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, ranging from Maine to Georgia. Use the interactive map below to explore the Trail, find shelters, locate parking and more.
Multi-Day Hiking
Multi-day hiking spans from spending an overnight on the Appalachian Trail to hiking every part of it through a series of multi-day hikes over many years.
The Appalachian Mountains
multi-day hiking is not as intimidating as thru-hiking, it takes more commitment than day hiking. It requires more preparation, equipment, food, clothing and knowledge of Trail regulations and backcountry skills. Planning is crucial to a successful multi-day hike, so be sure to check out the hiking basics portion of our website.
About Section hiking
A section hiker completes the A.T. in a series of multi-day trips over a period of years.
This method allows hikers to enjoy all the A.T. has to offer without making some of the sacrifices required for a thru-hike. Section hikers are considered 2,000-milers.
Minimize Campfire Impacts
Hikers are encouraged to practice campfire safety by keeping campfires small, using existing fire rings, using only firewood that is dead/down on the ground, and being aware of campfire regulations. If you decide to have a campfire, never leave it unattended and make sure that the campfire is completely out and cold to the touch before leaving.
